Persistent Dampness Rising Through an Aging Basement Slab

NJ basements with original 1920s-to-1950s slabs often show efflorescence, staining, and persistent dampness rising through the concrete even when the walls are dry. The original slab was poured without a vapor barrier directly on native soil.

Surface sealers and epoxy coatings fail repeatedly because the moisture is coming from below. A floor lowering project replaces the slab with a modern assembly: aggregate base, vapor barrier, insulation, and new concrete, eliminating the pathway for ground moisture entirely.
