When groundwater levels are high, water pressure beneath the slab can crack the concrete or push water up through existing cracks and floor-wall joints. This upward water entry is often more difficult to detect early than wall seepage but causes equally serious damage.

Recognizing Upward Water Pressure

Signs of hydrostatic uplift through the floor include cracks in the slab that have water staining along their edges, small puddles forming in low spots in the floor without an apparent wall source, floor paint or coatings that have bubbled or peeled from beneath, and in severe cases, heaving of portions of the slab where pressure is concentrated.

Why Sealing the Floor Alone Does Not Work

A common mistake is to apply a surface sealant over floor cracks without addressing the water pressure from below. Hydrostatic pressure is persistent and will find or create new pathways around any surface-applied barrier. Sealants applied to the floor surface without pressure relief below the slab are temporary at best and may fail rapidly when groundwater levels rise.
